Recently I visited “The Singing Ringing Tree”, a public artwork on the top of a hill near Burnley in England. It comprises "pipes of galvanised steel which harness the energy of the wind to produce a slightly discordant and penetrating choral sound covering a range of several octaves.”
I placed 2 dpa 4060 microphone inside it (not in the tubes, but in the frame, to help shield them from the strong wind), and recorded one of my favourite field recordings ever. It started raining and I could just huddle up right underneath it and just shield myself from the rain, whilst recording, haunting tones from the tubes, rain falling on them, then the rain stopping and birds starting to chirp, in duet with the wind through the tuned tubes, for about 40 minutes.
